In the June issue of the journal "International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery "has published a study done by researchers at Tecnalia (The Basque Country) CIBER BBN and the research group "Pathology and Maxillofacial and Dental Therapeutics" Biomedical Research Institute of Bellvitge (IDIBELL) directed by Prof. Dr. Cosme Gay Escoda, professor at the University of Barcelona and Maxillofacial Surgeon Medical Center teknon, studying dental implants coated with a new surface ion implantation.
This new surface has been patented ion implantation, after numerous studies in the first phase, conclude this work in humans.
Work began more than 10 years old, experimental laboratory studies that were published in 2003 in the journal "Clinical Oral Implants Research", the following 2 beagle dog studies published one 2007 in the journal "International Journal Oral & Maxillofacial Implants "and the other in 2008 in the "International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery”.
This study published this June ratifies the good results already obtained in experimental animals, dental implants coated with a surface ion implantation CO.
This study approved by the Ethics Committee for clinical trials and the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products, placing consisted mini implants with vertical half of the machined surface and the other ion implantation CO, in a group of patients whom simultaneously placing implants, already on the market, for oral rehabilitation, these implants were placed in the study maxillary tuberosity or retromolar trigone of the jaw.
Three months after the implants were removed with a trephine study, including a small portion of the bone surrounding the implant.
We evaluated the percentage of bone implant contact (BIC en ingles) by electron microscopy (SEM) and the conventional optical microscope, using, inter alia, the image analysis program Omnimet.
The results were more favorable for the vertical half of the implant with the ion implantation surface in relation to the other half mechanized. With the electron microscope the BIC was 54,8% versus 46,2% and light microscopy was 62,9% versus 57,9%.
These results confirm a better osseointegration with ion implantation surface CO, as previously shown in animal studies.
